Ambassador Eric Lavertu was on an official visit in Northern Province (districts of Jaffna and Mannar) to meet with the political authorities with a view to enhancing cooperation with France.
In Jaffna, he was received by the Governor of the Northern Province, Mr Suren Raghavan and by the Mayor of Jaffna municipal Council, Mr. Emmanuel Arnold. During the meeting with the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate studies at the University of Jaffna, Prof. Gunasingham Mikunthan, the Ambassador discussed the prospects for academic cooperation. The Ambassador met the Commander of the North Central Naval Area, Rear Admiral Merril Wickramasinghe at the North Central Naval Command Headquarters.
The Ambassador visited the French language and cultural centre Alliance française de Jaffna, which teaches French since 2004. He attended a cultural evening organized by the Alliance française’s students and awarded diplomas in French Language (DELF) to the students who had successfully completed their French language course.
Within the framework of its cultural and scientific activities, Alliance française de Jaffna conducts a digital archive project, which will see the digitization of the manuscripts of the Jaffna diocese, a large number of which are in French and provide important sources on the social and cultural history of Jaffna. This project is conducted in partnership with the Endangered Archives Programme (EAP) of the British Library, the Research unit “Mondes iranien et indien” (Iranian and Indian Worlds) of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Diocese.
In Mannar, the Ambassador exchanged views with Bishop Fidelius Lionel Emmanuel Fernando and with Mrs Shreen Saroor, founder of the Mannar Women’s Development Federation (MWDF), which addresses the needs of Women victims of war in the North of Sri Lanka. The issues related to development and reconstruction (health, access to water, irrigation, economic development), disappeared people and human rights were discussed during the meetings.
