Sanjeewa Puhpakumara, Winner of a Cinéfondation of Cannes Film Festival Grant, back from Paris.
Sanjeewa Pushpakuamara completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura in 2005 and obtained his master’s degree in Mass Communications from the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka. He has just spent four and a half months in France at Residence programme of Cinéfondation of Cannes Film Festival in Paris. His trip was devoted to the preparation of his upcoming film "Burning Birds" and to a journey through the world of French cinema: During my stay, I went to see movies about 3 times a day in average, mainly at the French Cinematheque, in the network MK2 theaters and at Forum des Images in Halles district.
This young talented director (born in 1977) welcomes the fact that he could find a French producer associated with two other European producers to ensure the future of his next feature of which he wrote the script during his stay in Paris: Burning Birds is a film that came out scratching my heart. It looks at myself, my mother and my country, through a microscope.
His first feature film "Flying Fish" (Ingilena maluwo), is inspired by his youthful experience in Eastern Sri Lanka. This film has deserved particular attention in the international arena, notably in France at the 33rd festival three continents of Nantes (2011) and received more than a dozen international awards.
Invited to attend the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in (15-26 May 2013), Sanjeewa will also participate in the international cinema market associated with it to provide an outlet for his film. Welcome !
