Relying on a vast global network, France’s cultural action is based on two pillars: the promotion of the French language and the exchange in the artistic and scientific fields, such as the performing Arts, the visual Arts, Literature, Film and research.

The main objects of French cultural cooperation are to promote France, its creation, its strengths, to foster links between local and international artists, to create discussions, and to encourage intellectual exchanges.

In Sri Lanka and in the Maldives, the Embassy has an active and ambitious policy of cultural dissemination, linked to the rich network of “Alliances françaises” established in these countries. The Alliances françaises de Kotte (Colombo), Jaffna, Kandy and Matara / Galle, in coordination with the French Embassy, organize cultural activities, involving French creators and artists. In Malé, in the Maldives, The Alliance française offers courses in French.

The French Embassy and the Alliance française network present, every year, the "French Spring" in Sri Lanka, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Sri Lanka and of numerous French and Sri Lankan institutions and enterprises. The French Spring is the occasion to present in Colombo events open to all, covering several areas of artistic creation in the two countries: music, photography, cinema, architecture, street art and gastronomy. Artists also travel to the provinces to host workshops and perform on stage.

The Embassy of France and the Alliance française are also eager to promote the debate of ideas and the rapprochement of the different communities and to strengthen the friendly cooperation between the two countries.

The Alliance française de Kotte opens its doors to a growing number of French-speaking students. The Alliances françaises de Kotte and Kandy also prepare DELF and DALF, the only recognized French diplomas in Sri Lanka. Alliance française de Kotte continues to support local artists and organize the arrival of French artists in Sri Lanka. The other Alliances of Sri Lanka are also involved in promoting French culture, in connection with local artists, and support the creative activities of their students.
