Happy Birthday ! 50th Birthday of Alliance française in Sri Lanka (2005)

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Alliance Francaise in Sri Lanka, lets take a look at the 50 years of French and Sri Lankan educational and cultural collaboration.

Alliance Française has been in Sri Lanka since 1955 and today it has become the centre of French language studies as well as the centre of many attractive cultural events. At first it was one Alliance Française in Colombo in 1955 but gradually it increased to a network of four : Kandy, Matara and Jaffna.

Today there are more than 2200 students learning French at the four Alliance Française in Sri Lanka: adults as well as children enjoying the typical French learning atmosphere, where many of them eventually get the opportunity to go to France to practise and further their knowledge.

In the diffusion of French language and culture, the Alliance Francaise activities are not restricted to teaching alone. The Alliance Francaise organizes exhibitions, social activities, evening concerts, film festivals, video projections, and offers a place for people and their different cultures to meet and have the opportunity to know each other. Fête de la musique, Lire en fête, Fête de l’Alliance, Semaine de la francophonie have become annual cultural rendez-vous.

So the coming three months of the year will be the time to celebrate the silver jubilee of the French presence in Sri Lanka with jazz concerts, music evenings, exhibitions and many more exciting events which will be an unforgettable experience to all Sri Lankans!
